Where Did the Day Go?

I had wonderful organizing plans for this day. What happened?

I was going to quickly go to town and pick up a few gifts for upcoming events, then go grocery shopping, then back home to spend some time purging book shelves. Everything went as planned - except the "quick" part.

The gift shopping included about 4 different stores and the grocery shopping included about time and a half due to using coupons. Plus, I had stopped at Starbucks to get a Chocolaty Chocolate Chip Frappaccino and having something to drink while I'm pushing a buggy and using coupons always slows me down.

Then, I got home and had to put away all the groceries (all the boys were out feeding horses and such) and that took awhile. I always clean out the fridge at the same time. I don't like to add new food to it while there are old things still in there. I also use alot of containers (jars, bowls, etc.) for items that stay on the counter, so I take things out of the packages and put them in the containers. This takes time too.

Sooooo........here it is almost 5pm and I'm pooped! But - I must march on!

I want to sell some books at our support group meeting this Friday and that means gathering them up. This always leads to moving other things around, which sometimes leads to rearranging. You just never know! Either way, I'll never accomplish anything if I don't get off this computer.

Gotta go!

My New Cooking Plan

I was asked by a friend (Hi Lou:) what my basic plan would be now that I am simplifying things in the kitchen. So I thought I would go ahead and write it down, just in case anyone else is struggling in this area.

I remember my mom telling me that when she was growing up, her mom always fixed the same thing on the same days of the week. For instance, Thursday was Pork Chops and Baked potato day. A book I have (Created to be his Helpmeet, by Debi Pearl) has a similar approach to cooking weekly, so I took from each of these examples and here's what I did:

First of all, I took a survey of the eaters, asking them what one meal they could eat each week and not get tired of. I then made a list of 7 different dinners, based on their choices and some other family favorites.

I then considered time factors, ease, church nights, etc. to decide what meal should go on what night.

Here is the basic menu:

Lunch is first/then dinner:

Monday: Pizza/Chicken & Ritz casserole, green beans, french bread

Tuesday: Grilled Sandwiches/Hamb. patties, mashed potatoes, buttered corn

Wednesday: Soup /Beans & sausage/rice/bread & butter

Thursday: Taco salad/Chicken with Ranch noodles w/peas & carrots, garlic bread

Friday: Grilled sandwiches/ Tacos with chips & salsa

Saturday: Chili dogs & frito pie/ Roast with potatoes & carrots

Sunday: out to eat for lunch or leftover roast/hamburgers & fries

Today I am cooking the taco meat (for tonight) in the crock pot so it will be ready by tonight with no effort on my part (practically). I will save just enough for Thursday's taco salad (freezer). Wednesday morning I'll put the beans in the crock for that night's beans and sausage, saving enough to use in the taco salad on Thursday.

I'm making out a master list today, cutting my coupons and going to the store on Saturday morning. I always go and get back in time to fix lunch. It's nice to go when I don't have to drag Collin along and that gives him time to do guy things with David. It also gives me a little time to stop by a store if I want.

Another aspect of this "same weekly menu" is that I will easily be able to spot my regular items on sale and stock up. When your menu changes every week it's hard to keep in mind what you need. This way I will not only save time from menu making, but money, as well.

Thanks Lou for asking for the plan. I hope this helps some other poor woman slaving over a blank menu.

Debbie

Too Much Info!

Ever get the feeling that you sound the same in every post? Sometimes I wonder why I even write, when it seems the days are basically the same around here, day to day.

Let me try something different today:

SPIRITUALLY
Right now I am reading Sheila Walsh's book "Beautiful Things Happen When A Woman Trusts God" and it is fantastic. I will write a review for Booksneeze when I'm done.

I still have to finish Jen Hatmaker's book "MakeOver". I'll get back to that one after I review the other.

SCHOOL WISE
I've cut back on some subjects for Collin and we're focusing on the three
"R's" right now. I really want him to be at a certain point by the end of the year, and I really get why "back in the day" they concentrated on the basics and the rest was added in small increments. I know, as a homeschooling family, it's tempting to take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities in History, Science, Art, Units, etc. and we can hurry through the drudgery of the basics. Well, in the end, which I can say, because I have one at the "end", basics really matter!

Bad thing for the oldest children in a homeschooling family is that they are the test subjects for all the curriculum changes, failed experiments, unschooling ideas, etc. Sorry Ted!

IN THE KITCHEN
Well, the Main Dish items were a bomb once again. Let me clarify - that's a bomb, as in not good, not a hit, sorry, not gonna happen again. Not a bomb, like Randy Jackson says, as in "Way to go, Dog". Nope. The family finally revolted on me and the Main Dish and said "we're not going to take it anymore!"

So, I gave the rest of my entrees to my friend Michelle, because her family isn't picky, and I'm back to making out a weekly menu.

However - on a positive note - David and I talked about this kitchen situation and decided that he would like to have a weekly menu that stayed the same for a while.
In other words - they want me to cook regular food, stuff they like, and keep it simple; even to the point of
cooking the same meals each week. Can it get any easier than that? Now, to those of you who are great at making out menus a month at a time, this probably disappoints you, but to me - it sounds like freedom!

So, yesterday I made a menu of several family favorites and today I will make out a master list to go with it. If I can really pull this off - I'm gonna be a happy cook!

TO-DO LIST PROGRESS
On the to-do list front - I've made progress this week, but hilariously, there is one phone call I've moved from Monday, down every day, and now it's on Friday's! Well, today's Friday; we'll see if I get brave enough to make it. I hate making calls to people I don't know! Gotta work on that!

IDEAS IN THE WORKS
I've got several ideas in the works:

We have about 4-5 wedding invitations for this Spring! Love is in the air this year! Anyway - I went to CBD.com and bought some very inexpensive little gift books about "date" ideas for couples.
I'm going to make gift baskets for each couple, adding along with the book: a candle or candles, 2 wine glasses, Sparkling Cider, and maybe a few other small items (hershey kisses or something) and wrap it with cellophane and ribbon. All total, these will probably cost about $10 per couple. Yay! I love gift baskets!

Also, Ted (teen) is leaving for Enchanted Rock (annual rock climbing trip) in about a week, so I'm going to do a quick clean-up/makeover in his room while he is gone. (Ty Pennigton where are you?) Last year we did his room in black and chrome, which was the type of furniture he picked out. He likes a more modern look, rather than the farm house style that the rest of the house is done in. But, after looking at black curtains and a black bedspread for a year - I'm done! He needs some color in there and guess what? Surprise! When he gets back, there will be some color! His computer desk and night stand will stay the same, but I am changing the windows and bed colors. Any "bright" ideas? I'm always open!

Collin's Birthday
Keeping it simple. I've allowed him to pick 2-3 friends and we're taking them to Sports Connection, which has go carts, bumper boats, etc. He had to choose between that or having a party here at home, where he would be allowed to invite more friends, but he chose to invite fewer friends and go ride the go carts. So, that means less hassle for me.

Ok, enough for today. I need to leave something to write about over the weekend.

I hope everyone has a great weekend with sunshine!

Until next time......

Blessings,
Debbie

Trusting God

As I turned on the computer today I was reminded of something that I learned many years ago: don't make decisions harder than they need to be.

In an email I received from Proverbs 31 Ministries, Marybeth Whalen wrote of "Trusting in Princes", which comes from the verse in the bible "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes." Psalm 118:9

In the article, the author is being reminded by a good friend (we all need one of those), to trust in God when making decisions, and not so much on people or circumstances.

Have you ever done that? Been so caught up in making a decision, even in wanting so badly to be in God's will, that you lose sight of trusting in God, and start placing all the weight on the circumstance?

I was reminded of a time in our lives when David was continually struggling with jobs. He had been laid off one year and it turned our lives and our faith upside down. We struggled with the question of God's will - where should he apply, where should he work? We made ourselves sick with worrying about making the proper choice and not wanting to be out of the will of God. Finally, a dear older man, whom we both trusted and loved, said very casually "God is not so worried about
where you work as he is in the fact that you have a job." That was such a simple statement, but it changed the way I was looking at things and I've never forgotten it.

That is what this article reminded me of today - God can take our wrong decisions and choices and he can work them for our good. We cannot expect to make perfect decisions all the time. It's unrealistic. What we can do is trust in God to right our wrongs. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't pray about things or live carelessly. What it means is that we can relax and trust that if we are living for the Lord, then his spirit is working in us, willing us to make good decisions.

Do you have decisions pending right now? How about trusting God as you do what you feel in your heart is the right thing? Trust in Him - not the circumstance. Sometimes we need to step out in faith and let God do the rest.

Have a blessed day my friends!

Keep Going!

Well, it pays to write about procrastination. I actually got my taxes ready to go yesterday, as well as checking off several other tasks I had been putting off. Whew! That felt good!

Now today I'm off to the doctor to see how my cholesterol, blood sugar, etc. are doing. I'm fasting right now and about to starve! Usually, by this time of the morning, I've had 2 cups of coffee and a Larabar (breakfast bar made of ONLY natural ingredients). Well, so far this morning, I've had a cup of water.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by everything going on and coming up? That's my state of mind right now. We've got both boy's birthdays coming up. Ted (my 16 yr old) is going on an annual rock climbing trip in a week, which happens to be the day after Collin's birthday party. So, while planning for the party (which I haven't even decided what to do yet), I will be listening to Ted tell me what we still need to buy to outfit him for his trip.

In addition to birthdays and Spring break, we have a free weekend trip that needs to be planned before a certain date or we lose it - so I'm having to think of that. Problem is that David has several work trips in the next few months that have to be considered.

And did I mention that Ted is graduating?

Ok, I'm going to stop now. I'm making myself anxious. I can't imagine that you want to share in that with me!

Good news is - American Idol comes on 3 times this week! I'm going for Didi. She's the Brooke White of this year. Honestly, we have to have some entertainment in the midst of all this chaos!

Have a great day and don't procrastinate!

Procrastination

I read a great quote this morning: "Procrastination is the thief of time", by Edward Young.

I have a problem with procrastination. I start out on Monday with a "to do" list, and by Friday I still have many of those things left to do. The worst is having to make phone calls. I don't like having to call people I don't know. For that matter, I really don't like getting on the phone at all. It's a time waster for me because I'm not great at talking and doing anything else at the same time.

I've had "Do Taxes" on my list for weeks now. I used to have those to the accountant by the end of January or sooner, but the last few years, I've crept closer to April than I'm comfortable with.

The article I read this morning on this subject said it's good to analyze your reasons for putting things off, so today, as I pass over some of the things on my list, I'm going to make myself identify the reason why and maybe, just maybe, I'll figure out what my problem is.

In the meantime, I hope everyone has a blessed day and a productive one.

A Mighty Warrior

Sometimes I read something in my morning Bible study that I really want to share with others. This morning is one of those times.

I'm reading a book right now by Sheila Walsh called "Beautiful Things Happen When A Woman Trusts God". It is an amazing book, as Sheila Walsh writes from her heart, with an easy, conversational style. These are the kind of authors I enjoy.

The chapter I read today was about a timid guy named Gideon. He doesn't really get much space in the Bible - just two chapters in the book of Judges - but the message is one that made a big impact on me.

Judges 6 & 7 tells all about Gideon and his encounter with God. I could sit here and tell you everything that goes on, but it would be much more effective if you open your Bible and read it for yourself. What I will share is the commentary that Sheila Walsh shares in her book.

Apparently, Gideon is an unlikely warrior. Due to the circumstances, God wants to use him to defeat the bad guys, but Gideon doesn't have the faith to do what God has asked him to do. Instead of moving on and finding a braver man, God stays and encourages Gideon, talks with him, and even accommodates him, when Gideon has doubts and needs a "sign" (or two). God doesn't lose patience with him or get angry at the reassurance that Gideon needs. Instead, God continues to speak to him and tells him that he will not be alone - God will go with him.

Even after all the encouragement from "The angel of the Lord", Gideon still asks for two signs from God - just to make sure he's heard the "call" correctly.

Ever do that? Ever hear (or think you hear) God calling you to do something and yet, you can't really accept that it was God you were hearing? Or perhaps you know it's God calling, but you can't believe that He would use you for the task. Sometimes we let our fear do the deciding for us. We're too afraid, either because it's out of our comfort zone, or we don't believe we have the ability to pull it off.

Gideon didn't believe he was the "mighty warrior" that God said he was (even before he accomplished anything), but God called him that because He could see the potential in him and knew what He was going to do through Gideon.

God sees us the same way. He sees what we can be if we will trust him and walk by faith. He sees what He can accomplish through us, if only we will obey when He calls. I love the verse in Judges 6:14 where the Lord turns to Gideon and says "Go in the strength you have." Gideon didn't actually have much strength or confidence in himself, but God was saying to him - take what strength you do have and I will give you the rest of what you need, to accomplish the task I've called you to. It's called trust!

Do you need to trust God today for a task He's called you to? Take His hand, trust Him, and "go in the strength you have". He will not leave you or abandon you. He will be the one guiding you, calling you a "mighty warrior" even when you don't feel like one.

Until next time.....

Blessings,
Debbie

Spring was Here

I saw a glimpse of Spring today and boy was it a welcomed sight!

It was such a nice day - sunny and in the 60's. I was able to open my doors - front and back - with the breeze coming through the screen doors.

I love to clean on this kind of day. With fresh air flowing through the house, everything smelling fresh and clean. It just makes you feel good!

I cleaned this morning then David took Collin and I out for our weekly Mexican food. Fajitas for 2 (or 3) and chips and hot sauce. Yum!

When we came home I started on the cookies that I've been wanting to make for about a week now. After the cookies were done, I was able to sit with a cup of coffee and a Karen Kingsbury book I'm reading right now. David and Collin were out exploring a dirt road (guy stuff), so I had about 45 minutes to sit and read.

Later, Ted and Maddey came for an early dinner. Ted had to play guitar at a church conference this morning, then he and Maddey were hanging out at the park and the mall. It was nice to visit with Maddey over dinner. Her parents have invited Ted over several times to eat, so I was glad to be able to serve her. After we ate he had to get to work for the evening.

We also had to visit an old friend in the hospital this evening, who had heart pains this week too. Thankfully he is doing well and will be coming home tomorrow. Praise God!

Funny - I don't think we started out with any plans today, except to hang around the house, working on some trim we needed to put up. However, we have managed to fill up our day with random activities.

Now, it's time to settle in for the night. Probably a Seinfeld or two, bedtime story with Collin, and then off to bed.

It's been a good day.
Hope you've had one too:)

Fed Up

By now we're all probably used to the stupid stories and backstabbing ways of the media; especially when it comes to the conservatives in this country. But, recently I've heard one of the worst excuses I think I've ever heard, for being down right hateful, and it makes me want to scream!

If you're a news follower at all, then you've surely heard the latest attack on Sarah Palin's family; more specifically her son Trig, by the disgusting show - Family Guy.

The attack coming from them is not surprising, due to the nature of this show. It's a liberal, biased, filthy minded "cartoon" that shouldn't even be on TV. However, what they lack is intelligence and compassion, not to mention, the ability to tell the truth.

They purposefully brought in a character who is disabled, just as Palin's son, and make the character say that "her mom is the former governor of Alaska" (which of course, is none other than Sarah Palin). This is a direct slam at the family of Palin, not just a generalized piece of humor.

When confronted about it, the show "people" said that they were not making fun of Trig, but Sarah. Do they not realize that Sarah Palin is a human being with feelings, not to mention a mom to a disabled child!?

What even disgusts me beyond that is that they now have the disabled actress who plays the part (in animation) saying the same thing: "We're making fun of Sarah, not the baby."

Palin's daughter Bristol calls the makers of the show "heartless jerks". Bristol is being kind.

I don't know about Sarah, but I think it's time she turn her husband loose. He should have taken care of Letterman back in the Fall and he should take care of these jerks now. Enough is enough.

Wanna bring out the mama bear in me? Mess with my kids.

Just a little venting going on.

It's Friday!

Good Friday morning! I am happy it's Friday for some reason. It's been a long week with our trip to the ER and too many days "off".

Yesterday I was still feeling the lack of sleep from Tuesday, and I didn't get a whole lot accomplished. It was one of those days when you walk around the house knowing there are many things that need to be done, but your motivation level is at zero. Even the kids were like that. Must have been in the air.

The day ended much better though. Ted finally got to do that outdoor concert at Chick-Fil-A and it was wonderful! (I will post pics too.) The band he plays with at church on Wednesdays opened for a bigger band - Chris Clayton, a Christian artist out of Dallas. It was basically a worship service in the parking lot. It was great! Not only did we hear some awesome music, but CFA was handing out free milkshakes and yogurt cups. They had prizes for the kids too. So nice to have a restaurant that is unashamedly Christian. Needless to say, this is one of our favorite places to spend our money.

It was 55 degrees last night and we were doing great until the sun went down. We stood outside listening to the bands from 5:30 til 7:30. When we got in the cars to go home we were frozen. We cranked the heat up to 90 all the way home! But it was worth it.

Today we have nothing planned, except "school". Obviously I will have a lot on my "to do" list since yesterday was a lazy day. I hope to get back into the swing of things. I need to work on our taxes (uggg) which I've been putting off for sometime now. I've had an itch to go out and buy some flowers and plants for the front porch, but I'm hesitant because I'm not sure if we'll get another freeze. The weather this year has been so unpredictable. I guess it's best to wait.

I would love to fix up our front porch but I need to see some ideas. If anyone has any they would like to share - that would be great! I also have a little garden/sitting area in the front yard that needs a major overhaul, so I'm open for pictures there too:)

Well, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Make the most of it!

Blessings to you all!

Debbie

Graduation Thoughts

It's amazing what a good night's sleep can do for you! All day yesterday I felt only half alive due to our lack of sleep the night before. Today, I feel alive again.

I have to admit, though, that I had a hard time getting back to work today. It's been nice to have a few days off from the routine.

I've been looking at diplomas and graduation invitations for my son Ted. I even reserved the local community center, where I thought we could have a party with just close friends and family. Well, when he came home from work last night and I presented him with the idea, he said he didn't want a big celebration. He would rather have a small gathering at home or at a nice restaurant, have a nice gift, and be done with it. Well, that makes it alot easier on me!

So now I'm down to having to get the diploma and maybe some simple announcement cards, just to send to friends, to let them know he has graduated.

For his "gift" he would like us to consider putting up a portable building in the back yard where he can house his recording studio. This is his life dream and what he's going to school for next year. Hmmm. Something to think about. I'm so thankful that he's not going off to school, that I might just find a way to make the little studio happen.

I found a great website at www.homeschooldiploma.com that is a one-stop-shop for graduation. They have diplomas, caps/gowns, invites, rings, etc. They even have "etiquette" tips on having an open house or a party. Lots of good information for those planning a graduation.

Lots to think about. Mostly I just want to be done counting credits!

Well, I'm off to think about supper for now.

Until next time....
Blessings!

A Trip to the E.R.

Ever look back on your day and wonder "what exactly did I do today"? Well, that's what I'm thinking about yesterday.

It was President's Day, so of course, it was a holiday at our house. Anything to keep from doing academics! That was actually ok with me since we had a pretty busy weekend.

I had some goals, but somehow none of them were accomplished.

Here's what I didn't do yesterday but intended to do:
1. Laundry
2. Cleaning
3. Make cookies
4. Put together a porfolio for Ted
5. Put together a folder for me
6. Print out some pictures

I did manage to take Collin to rent a game, buy some new towels, send out some emails, have lunch with David, make dinner, watch the Bachelor (not recommended), and get to bed about 11pm.

About 3:00am David woke me up and said he had been laying there for hours with a burning feeling in his chest and tingling down both arms. WHAT?

He was asking me if I thought we should go to the ER. Well, as little as my brain could function at that moment, I knew that if we DIDN'T go, he would continue to lay there worrying, so I said "Yes! Let's go." So, we dressed, woke up Ted to tell him we were leaving, and headed to the E.R.

Thankfully, we're just about 5-7 minutes from the hospital and it was a slow night. They did the EKG within about 15 minutes, but we had to wait on the blood test and chest x-rays. All in all, he was fine. The diagnosis was acid reflux, which we both have. I guess his went wild. We got home at 6:30 this morning and went back to bed. I was sleeping so good until the dog got up at her usual time to go outside. So, up I got to let her out. Uggg.

Now, I'm up, but I can tell this might be another "do nothing" day. David is staying home from work, due to no sleep. I'm dragging, so we'll see what happens.

Maybe I'll call this "Vice President's Day" and declare it a holiday.

New Template (AGAIN)

Sorry about the template changes, but the background on the last one was bothering me (the word going across the middle was a distraction). Hopefully, this one will stick around until I start itching for one that looks like Spring.

Hope everyone is having a great Monday!

A Great Weekend

This has been a great weekend! I told you about our unexpected date on Friday night, which was really nice. I think this is the first year in 16 years, that we have not had a child with us for our Valentine's dinner. We always have a dinner with the boys, but since Valentines day fell on Sunday this year, that was going to be almost impossible.

Saturday we accomplished so much around the house, the main thing being Collin's room. Just like our date on Friday, this project was totally unexpected - especially for David (sorry honey!). I was in the mood to do something creative around here, but when I passed by Collin's room, I knew there were some things that had to be taken care of before tackling anything else.

Let me start by saying - I'm ashamed that I have indulged my child with so many toys! No child needs boxes of toys! Although I had them neatly organized in baskets on a bookshelf, it was not nice to look at. And the closet was embarrassing. The sad thing is that Collin had not even played with alot of this stuff in a long time.

But here's something that makes you want to cry: you know your little boy is growing up when you give him the task of picking out 10 hot wheels (out of about 100!) to keep, and he doesn't even give you trouble. Same thing with the action figures. Just a year ago, this act of elimination would have created tons of drama. I guess this is a sign of him growing up. That was a bittersweet moment.

Once we narrowed down the toys, we were able to eliminate an entire bookshelf from his room!

I had been saving a new comforter for his bed, so I was able to get this out and put up the matching curtains. All in all, I'm very pleased. His school desk needs painting, but that will have to wait for a warmer day.

That night we were invited to dinner with some friends we haven't seen in a few years. We had a great time catching up and it was a nice break from all the work we had done that day.

Today, after church we both took a nap! That's what happens when you have all this excitement in one weekend! (HAHAHA)

I've just been informed that tomorrow is a "school holiday" (President's day) by my teen. You know what? I could use a break too. Why not?

Let's see......what kind of project can I get in to?

An Unexpected Date

I feel certain that anyone who regularly reads this blog will be so happy to NOT see the word Facebook in the title!

Let me say, though, that the Lord has blessed me in the last few days, with confirmation from others, that I was not crazy in my opinions (the ones that got me blasted). Thank you, Lord!

Now - on to happier times:)

The last part of the week was much better. We attended a new 4H group on Thursday, which was smaller and much more organized. On Friday we were invited to enjoy a Valentines party at my friend Kay's, who teaches several other children in her home. She teaches 3 girls and her own son, James, who is Collin's best friend. When she called to invite us, she said the girls insisted on having Collin over, as "he is part of us." Ahhh. That made me feel good! So, spinach dip in hand, we went to the party yesterday, where the girls had set out doilies and name plates for each person. Each girl brought Valentines to share (even for Collin) and blessed their teacher with gifts. It was really sweet to watch their love for Kay. She's been teaching them for 2 years now, in her home, and she's made an impact, for sure.

The best part of the day came afterwards. Kay offered to take Collin for the afternoon, so I called David, who had already planned on taking off early that day, and asked if he'd like to see a movie. We went to an early showing of "Valentines Day" and then to Outback for dinner (we beat the dinner crowd because of our early start.) We were picking up Collin and home by 7:30! And all without a plan!

As an added bonus, when we got home, I found a package on the back porch from "Pajama Grams". David bought me some beautiful pajamas, monogrammed with my initials. It was a great treat, as he knows I love pajamas.

Of course, it's one of those situations where we agreed on a mutual gift, but he snuck in this addes bonus. I'm going to have to get him back!

In case anyone's curious (I can't imagine that you would be), our "mutual gift" was the complete series of "Seinfeld". We were recording that and watching it every night after Collin went to bed. Now we are watching it in order of the episodes and enjoying the bloopers and commentaries. We're easily amused!

We have a comfortable, homey, life and we're enjoying it!!

Today I will attempt to change some scenery in the house. Some decorations have been in the same place for a while, and it's time for a change. If I do anything significant, maybe I'll post some pictures.

In the meantime, I pray everyone will have a blessed day. Thanks for stopping by!

Blessings,
Debbie

Getting off Facebook and God's amazing grace

I just had to share this testimony in a follow up to my last post.

As I shared a few days ago, I really felt like I had been tested the other day on Facebook, and felt like I failed the test.

Without going into great detail, my husband and I had shared some opinions we have about a certain city, that we have personally visited, that we feel is not a godly place. There is a lot of crime, partying, and overall, just a lot of evil going on. Well, apparently we hit a nerve with many people, even Christians, who love that city.

Subsequently, what took place, was a complete tearing down of my character and my Christianity. We were preached at and accused of being judgemental, told that we were perfect examples of what Christians shouldn't be. They sized us up, like they knew us so well, by our disapproval of a lifestyle that the city flaunts and wears like a badge. They even said that we should be in that city witnessing to people, not judging them.

Needless to say, by the end of the day, I was emotionally worn out! I had spent countless hours (I'm ashamed to say), trying to defend our opinion and then my own Christianity, until an atheist came on and started going at me. That's when I knew it was time to say good-bye.

After letting go for all of Monday night, I woke up Tuesday morning and through prayer, felt God telling me to say good-bye to Facebook. And, boy! What a sweet feeling of relief and peace I had when I hit that "deactivate" button!

My relief and peace came from, not only being free from the bondage of the computer, but freed-up to do other things that God wanted me to do. And the blessing did come!

I won't go into what God did for me, just yet, however I want to emphasize and encourage you, to hear what God's saying today. Are you wasting time on Facebook, Twitter, Blogger? Are you ignoring a task that you know He has put before you, yet you are procrastinating?

Whatever it is - let go of it and give God the awesome opportunity of blessing you for it. We don't need to buy God's love with our performances, but we will receive blessings when we obey.

Thank you, Lord!

And thank you, friends, for your encouraging words and prayers!

Until next time.......

A Failed Test AND Facebook

Monday was not a fun day. I think I was being tested, and I miserably failed.

That morning my Bible Study (Make Over, by Jen Hatmaker) told about the importance of living out our relationship with Christ, in front of our kids, daily.

Needless to say - my example that day - stunk.

I won't go into details about the situation, but it had to do with a conversation on Facebook - the place I'm starting to hate.

When you give an opinion on FB, you open yourself up to great criticism. Likewise, you can be sucked into criticizing someone else's opinion. Let's just say, that both of those situations took place and it wasn't pretty. By the end of the day I was emotionally exhausted and felt so bad about the conversation I had that day. It had consumed my thoughts most of the day, and dictated my mood, which was stupid.
Add that to a few other problems that took place, and I was a poor example of Christ's love to my kids.

Thankfully, God's mercies are new each morning! When I got up today and began to read some scriptures, I realized that yesterday was probably an attack by Satan. If you set your mind to live for the Lord, Satan will do his best to bring you down.
So today I'm on guard. I will do everything I can to fix what was broken yesterday, and be a godly example to the boys.

Have a great day!

Solar System winner and The Main Dish

Collin holding his project and his 1st place ribbon!

Solar System Project

Friday was our monthly support group meeting. The kids studied the planets throughout the Fall months and today they had to bring a project of the solar system. The projects were then judged by 4 of the moms who didn't have a child in that age group.

We had so much going on at the time of the judging, that we had actually forgotten about the contest, until another mom whispered to me that she was pretty sure Collin won the blue ribbon.
He was so surprised and happy!

After lunch, we went to a friend's house, whose daughters are actually asking to be homeschooled! For about 2 hours I sat and answered questions for her, about curriculum, record keeping, and just general topics of homeschooling. It was nice to be in a conversation with someone willing to admit the failures of the government educational system, instead of telling me how stupid and deprived homeschoolers are. After a while, the daughters came home from school and agreed with their mom about the deficiencies in their education. I left there feeling like I had actually given them some hope for their remaining years in school.

Saturday morning I met my "cooking" friend for coffee and then we headed out to the Main Dish. We each had 12 entrees to make, which takes about 1 & 1/2 hours. We always have a good time when we do it together. Our workstations are right across from one another, so we try our best to follow the recipes while holding conversations about our families. It's a wonder we don't mess up our meals, but somehow we get it done.

So....here's what we'll be eating for the next month:

Chicken pockets (chicken mixture wrapped in a croissant, rolled in butter/pecans)
Green chili chicken enchiladas
Black bean turkey chili
Crock pot sloppy joes
Pesto Chicken
Honey Pecan Chicken
Mustard/Wine Pork tenderloin
Roast with mushroom gravy
Cheesy Italian tortellini
Polynesian pork chops
(I doubled up on the chicken pockets and the roast)

and for dessert:
Decadent cake balls (chocolate cake balls dipped in white chocolate) YUM!

After making the meals at the Main Dish, I did the rest of my shopping at Krogers. I stocked up on sides, breakfast, lunch, staples, and household necessities. Obviously, I'm not planning on going back anytime soon! On a good note - with my coupons at Krogers I saved $50! Not bad.

Saturday morning Ted took the ACT test. It was about 4 hours long and according to him, there was nothing but high level math on the math portion. He said the Language section was very doable, but the math started out way above his head. Oh well. I guess if he were going into a field where that mattered, I'd be worried. For now, I'll be content with him knowing the foundations of math and knowing how to earn a living, balance a checkbook, and staying out of debt!

He said he felt the difference between homeschooling and ps while testing, because the ps kids are groomed all their educational lives, for testing. He's not used to condensing his knowledge into little circles on a piece of paper. I've obviously deprived the kid since I don't "teach to the test" as they do here in Texas.

Tonight is the Super Bowl. I'm not into football all that much. Although, if I was going to be a sports fan, this would be one of the few I would be interested in. I'm more interested in hearing Carrie Underwood sing the National Anthem. But, David and Collin will be watching it with David's dad, next door, and I'll be scrapbooking. Most likely I'll be waiting for Extreme Home Makeover to come on. Ted will be at work:(

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

Blessings,
Debbie

Co-op Day and Menu Planning

What a long week this has been! I have been in this house basically, all week, with the exception of dinner at a friend's house Monday night.

By Tuesday Collin had an allergy attack, which had him stopped up and coughing for 3 days! Today will be our first day out all week! Talk about cabin fever!

Today we have our monthly support group meeting and co-op. Even though this was a "sick" week, we still had to put together a Solar System project for today, and make cupcakes, and 20 valentines! I guess it was a good thing we were stuck at home or we might not have accomplished so much!

After the meeting, I am going to a friend's house to talk with her about homeschooling. She is preparing to pull her kids out of the government school and teach them at home (yay!) and she needs some help. Boy, do I remember those days!

Tonight we are having dinner with some friends from church at one of our favorite places - New York Pizza and Pasta. Very good food and great atmosphere.

Tomorrow I am going to the Main Dish to fix my 12 entrees for the month. They have some great things on the menu for February.

I spent yesterday afternoon making out a monthly menu and grocery list to go along. I even made out a "Pantry Staple" and "Household Staple" list. My goal is to go to the store every 2 weeks and not go back unless it's for medicine or something that comes up.

Each grocery day I will check my "staples" list and mark anything that needs to be bought. My grocery lists are for 2 weeks at a time - "Weeks 1 & 2" and "Weeks 3 & 4". I made out a rotating menu for breakfast and lunches during the week, so basically, Weeks 1 & 3 are the same, and weeks 2 & 4 are the same. The weekend breakfasts and lunches are different though.

We always fix a big breakfast on Saturday mornings and Saturday lunch is always something that we can have enough of for Sunday night. Sunday lunch we eat out.

The great thing about the Main Dish meals is that I don't have to come up with another menu for supper and I don't have to shop or chop for those meals either. Anything to save a little time and brain power.

For some reason, meal planning is one of the more stressful duties in my home.

This will be a busy day, but I'm so glad to be getting out! I prayed for sunshine today. I hope we get some!

Either way - God is good - all the time!

Take care!
Debbie

Looking for Valentine Ideas

I have changed my template in honor of February - the month of Love! Actually, I'm planning on changing at the beginning of each month - just for fun.

I am really wanting some ideas for Valentines Day this year. Usually we celebrate it with dinner at home with the kids. We've always included our kids, from the time Ted was a baby.

Last year one of my goals was to celebrate - bigger! This year I want to stay in that same mindset. I want to celebrate life like the blessing that it is. So, I need creativity!

Let me know what you're planning for Valentine's Day.

Thanks!

Budgeting Will Make You Crazy

One of the things I love about the New Year is the idea of starting over in the areas that I didn't quite succeed the year before. One of those areas would be budgeting.

Budgeting is kind of like exercise; I'm gung-ho for about a week, then it's too hard, so I quit. Ok, I'm just being honest, even though I now sound like a failure!

Anyway - last week, if you clicked on the "Organizing" button on my blog, you might have seen the article on budgeting and several links to online sites that help you get your act together. Well, that's where I was the better half of last week.

I searched for days, all the different budget sites, looking and pondering, pondering and looking. There are so many - free and not free - invasive and not invasive. It took me about 2-3 days to search through about 10 sites, trying to find the one that I thought I could actually work with.

Some of them are so cumbersome that you would spend a ridiculous amount of time just setting it up and learning how to use it. These, I passed on. Then some of them actually want your password and username to your bank account! Excuse me?! I won't give my feelings on this, just incase you're one of those that have done that, but for me - I just couldn't take that risk.

There were several that used the "Envelope" method, which I love, but they were either too complicated or too invasive (by that, I mean they wanted too much info.). This is the method that I have tried to implement many times, and find it hard to do, for several reasons. However, it's a tried and true method, so I'm determined to use it. It's ideal on the computer, because you don't have to carry around the cash, which always scares me a little. If you use the computer method, you just set your deposits to divide into each "envelope" and every time you use your check card, you tell it what envelope to come out of. Very simple. You would think! The problem was that the one program I tried was so complicated to set up, I gave up after a few HOURS!

In the end - I settled on a person and a website that I felt I could trust - Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover. I've read his books "Total Money Makeover" and "Financial Peace" and have used his envelope method before, but this time, I signed up for his online budgeting program.

The TMM site helps you make out a budget for each month, helps you track your debt payoff, and shows your progress on a chart. It's not complicated and overly fancy, and I guess that's why I chose it. As you know, if you follow Dave Ramsey, he has "baby steps" that he likes you to accomplish. So his budgeting site helps you track your progress of the "steps" that you should be taking to reach financial freedom.

I made some new envelopes and I'm carrying around cash for each category of spending money.

Here is an example of my envelopes:
Groceries
Eat Out/Entertainment
Hair Cuts
Medications
Allowance
Pets
Misc. (gifts, or things that come up unexpectedly)

I keep the "gas" money in the bank because I prefer to use my check card at the pump.

The only think that deters me with actual envelope spending is having to get my envelopes out at the point of paying. It is nerve racking for me to find the correct envelope and feel like everyone is wondering why I am carrying around 5-6 envelopes with money in them. That's just a personal problem I'll have to deal with. I need to not worry about what people think - right?

Besides that - I'm determined to make it work this time. THIS IS THE YEAR! ( I say that every year) that we pay off all of our "stupid debt" and, as Dave Ramsey says - "start living like no one else". We'll see!

Have a great week!
