Looking Forward (Not Behind)

I got this GREAT POST in my INBOX today from ALLUME.

The author, Jill Monaco made such a great point when she said that instead of looking back, we need to be looking forward, at what God is up to.   I totally agree!

Here are the great questions she proposed and I think they are definitely worth considering:
  1. What great new character trait do you see developing in your child?
  2. Is there a new woman you’ve met that God would ask you to love on?
  3. What new skill can you work on?
  4. Is there a totally new idea you should write about?
  5. What new passion are you seeing birthed in your husband?
  6. What dreams are you waiting on and what can you do to make a step toward them?
  7. What new recipe can you try?
  8. Is there a new place can you explore? (with your kids or alone)
  9. What new verse or promise does God want you to hold on to this year?
  10. Is there a new ministry you should support?

Here are my answers to these thought-provoking questions:

1. What great new character trait do you see developing in your child? In my 13 year old, I see the great desire to share Jesus with others.  He mentions this to me occasionally, that he can't wait for God to use him to witness to someone specifically.   I reminded him that all the times he has asked kids if they are Christians, writing a blog about the Bible, and the example he sets for his peers, is witness enough at this point.   God is using him in his circle of influence and it's important!

In my 19 year old, I see maturity in the ways of life and always, in the things of God.   He is always trying to consider God's will for his life - in ministry, work, relationships, etc.    He is fearless when it comes to ministering to the down and out, and totally puts his faith in the Lord for protection.   Needless to say, this grows "mom's" faith, as well.

I'm so very proud of the character of both of my boys.  I give God all the glory:)

2. Is there a new woman you’ve met that God would ask you to love on? I have several new women in my life this year, thanks to joining a new homeschool group.   I have truly been blessed by this every-Friday-group!   Such "real" ladies, who have no pretense about who they are.  Friendships can be surface or they can be deep; it all depends on the realness of the individuals involved.   I feel like I can be "real" with these ladies and that, to me, is reason to love!

3.  What new skill can I work on?   Oh boy - this might be a little harder to answer.     I guess I'm tempted to try the guitar this year.   Only a little bit tempted!   It looks hard, but I'm curious as to whether I could actually do it or not.   I'm the only one in the family that doesn't play, so I think that right there is reason enough, don't you?

4.  Something totally new to write about?   Maybe I should ask my "readers" what they would like to read about.   Sometimes it feels like I write about the same old things!   Any suggestions?

5. What new passion are you seeing birthed in your husband?   David is completely teaching himself to play the guitar from scratch!   He's even dabbled a bit in writing a few songs, which I think is great!   Hopefully, I can join this passion of his and we can "make beautiful music together"!

6. What dreams am I waiting on?  For myself, I am waiting on the Lord to use my writing in a bigger way.   I guess I'm kind of like Collin, in the way that I know I'm reaching a "few", but in my dreams, I'm reaching "many"!   But, I'm willing to wait on the Lord and his timing.    The worst thing you can do besides being fearful of moving forward, is to move forward - ahead of God's plan!

7.  What new recipe can I try?  Hmmmm.  I guess if I had to pick something that I've never made, and always purposely kept my distance - it would have to be GUMBO.   Chicken and Sausage Gumbo (I don't eat seafood) is something I wish I could make and maybe this will be the year I try it!

8.  Is there a new place can you explore? (with your kids or alone)  I can't think of a new place I would like to explore, but I can think of a way I would like to challenge myself in the future and that is exploring more, while traveling with David on business trips.   I'm not one to go out in the bigger cities and explore, while he's in meetings.   I have a fear of getting lost and completely not knowing how to get back to the hotel.   But, I would like to get beyond this fear and take advantage of traveling more and seeing new things in new cities.

9.  What new verse or promise does God want you to hold on to this year?  God has purposefully brought the prayer of Jabez back into my life this year and I'm embracing it fully!   I love the simplicity of this prayer, the confidence of Jabez,  and the fact that God listened to his prayer and granted it.   I am believing in God to do the same for me and my family!

10.  Is there a new ministry you should support?   This was my exact prayer this morning!  I'm asking the Lord to unite David and I, in supporting someone in need.   We had a few opportunities to help individuals this past year and there is just such a wonderful feeling about actually giving to someone specific, instead of dropping a check in a plate and never knowing how it's being used.   To see a real need being met is what spurs us on to keep giving in the way that God asks us to in his word.

So there are my answers to looking forward in 2013!   New growth, new ministries, new dreams, new goals, new friends, new promises.

I would love for you to pick ONE of these questions and share your answer with me in the comments!   PLEASE!

I look forward to knowing a little piece of your heart for this next year.

Until then.......

  2. Ditto to number two. I look forward to every Friday. It's like going on an adventure and you don't know what topic might come up. I love sharing cooking ideas. Which brings me to number 7, trying new recipes. Love the meatball recipe and the trick to individual chicken pot pies with a biscuit. Yum!! The next one I'm going to try is your corn casserole.
My husband says I make the best gumbo. I'll have to share on Friday.

  3. Here goes by Darla =)

    1. Ashlyn (13) She has always felt the call to ministry...this year she has been writing stories about people who have had times (she has been writing from the other person POV) She is having to see how someone else lives to write about it.
Austin (10) His love for cooking and creating beautiful art with food. He feels God has called Him to own a restaurant and to live off the land as much as he can.
Grace (7) Her ability to communicate through prayer has grown so much. Each time I hear her I am moved...its not just the cute factor but the heart felt pleas to God him self.
Buttercup (infant) I see her bonding with us and in her eyes I can see how much she loves us and always will.

    2. God has blessed me with some really wonderful mothers that I actually have something in common with...other than home school. I loves my new friends and look forward to seeing where God places us and how we encourage each other to follow Him!!

    3. I pray that God gives me the wisdom to produce great award winning films for Him. I am tired of the trash on TV today and if I can change one person for Him it will be worth every ounce of energy put into it!

    4. I want to write a letter to Buttercup for her to read one day....I want her to know how much she changed my heart!!!

    5. I have seen my husband go from wanting to help children to fighting....standing up for them!! Get em Honey!!!! =)

    6. Buttercup.....we will keep marching...one day God will tear down the wall of our Jericho and will show us our long awaited promise!! Praise God for his faithfulness!!

    7. I hope there are lots of new recipes that I try cooking with Austin...I want to be part of what God has called him to do =)

    8. The new place that we want to explore as a family is Costa Maya...we were blessed to be there one time by accident....while there we felt God tugging our heart strings for His people there. Who know when or how but one day we will return there to minister to His children.

    9. The prayer of Jabez keeps coming up!! I want to a bigger home for more children...maybe even Marcus' parents....a bigger production company to reach more people....a resort or place in Costa Maya....but what ever God has in our future....I plan to answer His call.

    10. New ministry...where ever God calls we will go!

  4. Definitely looking forward to those dreams being realized! Not so much DREAMS, but talents being used that up until now have been ignored, suppressed, and brushed aside by others because of... ? I don't know, can't speak for them. :) I just have to keep going, regardless, knowing that though I may have been broken, crushed, and swept away by others, whether intentional or unintentional, HE has picked up the pieces and made a beautiful mosaic that is at least interesting to look at, if not beautiful! lol

Did I say too much...? haha!

Oh, and I very much look forward to Fridays, too! Don't you find it odd that at first you sort-of dreaded it, because it was so boring, but now it's the best thing! You ladies are AWESOME! Thanks for loving me, too! :)

    1. Julie,
At first we just didn't know what treasures were right in front of us. Now I don't want to miss a Friday!

You may have been broken, but only so God could put you back the way He wanted you to be:)

Your value comes from the Lord and not mean people:)

We love you and your crazy, zany, outspoken, Texan way!!

  5. It's really not a new passion but I am praying that God uses Ethan's passion for the lost as well.

I would LOVE to learn to make good Gumbo, too! JoAnn, I see a cooking class coming soon! :)

My husband is working really hard at learning the music business and how to promote Rachel. I am amazed at his fortitude. Really, it's all in God's hands and He is using Jerry to bring us down this path.

Now, that I've discovered what fun is being had on Fridays, (how did I miss this for so many months?) I really look forward to visiting and laughing with all of you!!

Sorry, I picked more than one but I love filling out surveys, so this qualifies

I love ALL your answers, Debbie!

  6. Wow, Darla. You really got into the spirit of this:) Your answers are all amazing! I'll tackle more than one, but Darla definitely wins the prize.

#2 The Friday group is amazing, a gift from God, and truly a blessing. Each one of you is precious to me in so many ways!

#3 Photography intrigues me and is something I've told myself I want to learn. I've bought several books/DVDs to help me out in this area, so maybe I'll actually read the books and watch the DVDs soon.

#5 My husband decided to tackle gardening this weekend. Not sure it qualifies as a new passion, especially since it brought forth much pain to his back. Yikes!

#7 Yesterday, I did go ahead and try a new recipe, Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken. It turned out fairly tasty and is now a keeper according to my husband. Yay!

#10 I love the idea behind the new ELFS ministry that Toni G. started so my goal is to be supportive of what's being done there.
